In Outlander, Jamie’s pet name for Claire is “Sassenach.” We are the Sass3nachs so this sangria is right up our alley!
This recipe can be found in various places on the web. This particular Sassenach Sangria was given to me as part of a gift from a “Secret Santa” at work, along with some of the ingredients and a tartan blanket!
I mixed the fruit, brandy, and wine together the night before and placed it in the fridge. Just before serving, I added the Sprite. I don’t recall which wine I ended up using (the bottle given as part of the gift was long gone…), but I read somewhere to use one that has spice notes to enhance the flavor. I do remember that I purchased an inexpensive bottle of wine as it would be mixed with other ingredients.
Result: the strawberries and apples were VERY STRONG since they were sliced and absorbed the alcohol. Overall it was delicious! Just eating the apples and strawberries was a bit difficult due to the intensity. Perhaps soaking them overnight was a little too long! The 2 hours indicated on the recipe should suffice, but I would still add chilled Sierra Mist or Sprite just prior to serving so the carbonation doesn’t fizzle out.
