The Making of Outlander with Tara Bennett and Script Writers – Pasadena, California

To some people, we may seem a bit fanatic, especially to those who have not read or watched the Outlander Series.  We amaze ourselves, at times, for the lengths we go through just to attend an Outlander event.  Although Sass3 attended Tara Bennett’s book signing of The Making of Outlander (about 350 miles away in Scottsdale, Arizona) back in November, we found ourselves, again, taking yet another journey to see her – all in the name of Outlander! We made a second trip to Pasadena, California, (and purchased an additional book) for one more autograph session.  We can never grow tired of Outlander – yeah, we’re a bit fanatic!

In today’s blog, we will share our adventure to Vroman’s Bookstore, Outlander scriptwriters’ (Ronald D. Moore, Toni Graphia, and Anne Kenney) panel, and the book release.  We will also present the Outlandish treasures discovered as we perused the gift shop.

On December 12, 2016, Vroman’s Bookstore presented Tara Bennett’s book, The Making of Outlander.  The store hosted a question & answer session, led by Tara Bennett, with Outlander scriptwriters.  Insights were revealed regarding the writing process and favorite episodes.  The evening ended with autographs and photos.

Heading to Pasadena took us less than 2  1/2 hours from San Diego, California.  The event began at 7 pm.  Avoiding the treacherous traffic was essential so we left at noon. We did not encounter any gridlock and made it to our destination quicker than expected.  Here are the directions we took:

Vroman’s Bookstore

695 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA 91101
  • 805 north to Los Angeles
  • 5 north to Los Angeles
  • 110 north to Pasedena
  • Take S Los Robles Ave to E Colorado Blvd/Historic Rte 66 E
  • Turn right onto E Glenarm St.
  • At the traffic circle, take the 3rd exit onto S Los Robles Ave
  • Right on E Colorado Blvd/Historic Rte 66 E
  • Vroman’s Book Store is on the right.

We arrived at 2 pm, with 4 hours to spare, to a busy Pasadena.  We parked the car at Vroman’s parking lot.  The lot permits 90 minutes of parking which was plenty of time for us to purchase our books and secure our seats.  Later, we moved the car to a different location:  62 N El Molino Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101.  It was a block away and had ample spaces. There, we paid $5 to park until 2 am.  The parking lot accepts both cash and credit cards.  Click here for other parking options.

We arrived extremely early, but some fans were already seated upstairs.  About 60 chairs were set up, and the first row was occupied or reserved.  We were able to find great seats in the second row.

By 6 pm the room was packed.  Additional chairs were added to accommodate more people.

The writers arrived and entered the room around 7 pm.  Below is a short two minute video of the their entrance and the introduction of Tara Bennett.

Tara Bennett has authored more than twenty official movie and TV companion books. These are a few:

  • Sons of Anarchy
  • The Official Making of Big Trouble in Little China
  • Lost Encyclopedia
  • The Art of Ice Age
  • Terminator Salvation:  The Official Companion
  • Sleepy Hollow – The Art of the Series

Below, the panel listens during Tara Bennett’s introduction, right before the question & answer panel session.  A book signing immediately followed.

The author, Tara Bennett, of The Making of Outlander opened the Q & A by welcoming everyone and thanking her panel for their presence.

Ronald D. Moore shares his writing process and his favorite episodes.

View our five minute video of the scriptwriters’ proud and favorite episodes (beginning at 42 seconds).

Some highlights of proud and favorite episodes :

  • Ronald D. Moore mentions “The Wedding” episode briefly, but explains how episode 14 in season 1, “The Search,” is one of his personal favorites.
  • Toni Graphia discusses episode 8 in season 1, “Both Sides Now,” as one of her proud episodes; however, “Faith,” being her favorite, not only in Outlander, but anything she has written in her whole career.
  • Anne Kenney is very grateful for having the opportunity to write “The Wedding,” but talks about enjoying the return of Laoghaire MacKenzie in episode 8 of season 2.  She liked the challenge of  adding her for later episodes in the show.

After the discussion, we were able to get The Making of Outlander book signed.  The panel was kind enough to pose for pictures.  We are so grateful!

Each guest was also permitted to bring 3 addtional books to be autographed.  Mela brought a Season 1 Outlander Poster and another copy of The Making of Outlander she received at the Arizona signing.  Notice Diana Gabaldon’s signature.

Mela brought these to be signed.

Lady K had Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and her first copy of The Making of Outlander signed.

Outlander treasures at Vroman’s

Because we arrived about 4 hours early to the event, we were also able to shop.  The store offers not only books, but excellent gifts for just about anyone.  We were especially lucky to spy some Outlandish-themed items.

They, of course, had a collection of Diana Gabadon’s books.

We spied some “Fraser” scented candles and body lotions.  These Thyme Fir Frasier products had a mild, but  natural fragrance.

We found these ‘humongous’ hedgehogs which would make a great present for any child …or Outlander fan!

More hedgehogs….look at this toothbrush holder.  Not sure what our husbands would think if we purchased these for ourselves!

What would they say if we bought this hedgehog calendar?  It does say “Adorable” Hedgehogs!

These tartan, Scottie holiday cards are gorgeous and elegant.

Again, more hedgehogs.  These animal clips would be wonderful for our papers.  Instead of paper clips, we can use these!

Now these were super cute!  The seeds in tiny hedgehog pots are too precious.

The event ended close to 8 pm and we decided to join Outlander SoCal Edition for dinner next door at Blaze Pizza.  They offer their signature and build your own pizzas.  For vegans and gluten-free customers, there are pizzas for you too!

We finally headed home at about 10 pm.  The 2 1/2 hour drive may seem long, but the time flew by as we discussed the unforgettable evening.  We are so lucky to live in Southern California – we have sunshine and Outlander!
