San Diego Comic-Con 2017 is a huge event any participant would describe as colossal! With about  150,000 visitors, it can intimidate any attendee – whether new to SDCC or a veteran. Undeniably, it is one of the largest affairs the city hosts where fans queue up for hours, and often times overnight, to be first in the panel discussion halls. Stamina is a must in order get through one day of Comic-Con. Making its presence known this year was Outlander, especially with its huge fan following. It drew people from across the country, and even the world, to see their favorite characters. Today, Sass3 highlights Outlander and briefly shares their favorite moments.

Highlights and Favorite Moments

The Print Shop

Many booths at the San Diego Comic-Con provided Outlander collectibles and mementos throughout the convention floor. However, one huge highlight was Starz’s reproduction of Jamie Fraser’s print shop. It boasted the actual “A. Malcolm, Printer and Bookseller” sign that was used during the filming of Season 3. Other replicas of props utilized in the show were also available. Those who visited, reminisced the moment when Jamie and Claire reunited after being apart for 20 years. This was the booth that most, if not all, Outlander fans wanted to see.

When entering the print shop, attendees would draw cards from a bag to determine their prize. Each guest had the opportunity to receive an Outlander flask, tote bag, shirt, tattoo or an autograph session with Diana Gabaldon, Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin. Sass3 wasn’t so lucky to receive the “golden ticket,” but won a flask, tote bag, and t-shirt. Lady K, nonetheless, was fortunate to have visited this booth several times!

The back side of each shirt had Outlander printed in gold foil. Then a design was chosen to be printed on the front.

Autographs

It was a frenzied crowd during the autograph session in the print shop. Richard, Sam, Cait, Sophie, Diana, Maril, and Ron were escorted by bagpipes, played by the Lady Pipers, into the print shop. The score of fans that circled the booth did their best to catch a glimpse of the stars during the signings. Cell phones lined the windows to photograph the actors in action.

One grand moment was when Richard Rankin looked directly at Jae and pointed to her. She couldn’t contain her excitement and was extremely lucky to capture it on film. It was very special, to say the least, and left her smiling and in awe for the rest of the day!

Cosplay

Cosplay could be seen everywhere at the Con, and Sass3 spied a beautiful Claire dress from Season 2, Dragonfly In Amber.  The construction of the dress took nearly two months to complete. Hand painted flowers to replicate the original embroidered panels found on the actual costume were added. Mela was more than impressed with the detail of the seamstress’ work.

Outlander Panel

On Friday, the Outlander Panel was held in Ballroom 20 and was hosted by the beautiful Jenna Dewan-Tatum. The panel lasted for 30 minutes which included a game, Truth or Dance. As you may have inferred by the name, the stars either answered questions truthfully or danced. Every actor grooved, with the exception of Tobias Menzies. It was a delight to see Sam, Cait, Richard, Sophie, and even Graham demonstrate their best moves. The audience savored every moment: the waltz, the prancing, bumps, twirls, jigs, and struts. Graham’s suave sways were adorable and will forever be imprinted in the viewers’ minds! To end the discussion, the audience was gifted with a sneak peek of the first episode of season 3. The crowd screamed with excitement, making it the pinnacle of the day!

Bagpipes

The Lady Pipers with Tress Maksimuk, also known as the Dark Isle Piper, were heard on the streets of the Gas Lamp District, the surrounding areas outside the San Diego Convention Center. Drawing huge crowds, the Scottish sound of these instruments attracted onlookers and those fascinated with the music. All were mesmerized by the allure of the melody when the musicians escorted the cast, producers, and Herself, Diana Gabaldon, everywhere they went. It was unequivocally a treat to hear!

Trading Cards

The Outlander cards were displayed at the Cryptozoic booth. Several signature cards were shown like Sam Heughan’s and Richard Rankin’s. A promotional card, trading card number 9, was being given to fans. Collectors were also able to purchase a special San Diego Comic-Con pack. This booth also presented other themes so there was a lot to see.

Podcast

On Saturday, a fan based panel between Outlander Podcast, Outlander TV News, and Great Scot Blog was held at the downtown San Diego Library. Fans attended the conversation, as an open forum was created to talk about characters, storylines, books to screen comparisons, and the new episode that was viewed the day prior. The lively dialogue between the panel and fans was quite engaging. New ideas and insights were exchanged allowing new perspectives of the books and TV series to form. At the conclusion of the discussion, five lucky fans won a copy of Seven Stones to Stand or Fall.

The San Diego Comic-Con is an unforgettable event to say the least. Sass3 enjoyed making new Outlander friends and reconnecting with old ones. 2017 Con is undoubtedly much more memorable because of Outlander. Sass3 is looking forward to seeing them again next year.

  1. As a novice attendee to Comic Con, I have to say it was well worth it, as it lived up to personal bucket-list itinerary to check off expectations! Displays, exhibits, guest panels & autographs, I agree were all magic energy. Location – San Diego makes the event iconic & special, as if you’re part of & witnessing the greatest show on earth! The Con is the focus of the week in town brought to the world. Can’t get, or reproduce the special home grown yet big time feeling anywhere else. The crowd emotionally cheered & clapped Sunday night as the P.A. thanked everyone for another successful year. Proud to be part of the rare geek experience, now as a vet!
