Outlandish Vancouver with David Berry and Àdhamh Ó Broin

Last weekend a series of Outlander events took place in Vancouver, Canada where fans assembled to meet the honorable character Lord John Grey, played by David Berry, and the lively Gaelic specialist, Àdhamh Ó Broin. The intimate gathering was organized by Koko Pipkin, founder of Outlandish Vancouver, and her team. The three days included a list of activities where Outlander participants had the opportunity to interact with the TV star and language consultant. The Outlander function, which also coincided with the Surrey International Writer’s Conference where Diana Gabaldon presented, began October 19th and ended on the 21st.

The festivities of Outlandish Vancouver brought in people from Canada and the United States, providing a variety of options to choose: meet-and-greets, autograph sessions, panels, and hotel suite parties with David and Àdhamh. This extremely unique opportunity delivered the ultimate fan experience because of its small setting. It was, in my opinion, one of the most cherished Outlander affairs I have ever attended – I’m still on cloud nine!

Today, I would like to share with you what this group had to offer. Read on to see the timeline of sessions that guests were able to attend and a short description of each. I hope you have a chance to go to one of these functions in the future because my experience with David and Àdhamh was priceless.

The Menu of Events

  • Thursday, October 19: Ardsmuir Dinner

  • Saturday, October 21: Hotel Suite Party with David Berry and Àdhamh Ó Broin

A more relaxed and casual atmosphere, this two hour party had a limit of only 22 people. Guests at the party mingled and chatted with David and Àdhamh. Visitors were also able to take selfies with them.

That’s pretty much it! Despite it only lasting three days, it was jam packed with so much – conversations, songs, and laughter.  The only thing missing was Diana Gabaldon, herself. She was not part of the gathering,  but she wasn’t too far away.  She was nearby presenting at the Surrey International Writer’s Conference  where some of the fans also attended. Free signings with Diana was scheduled at the Sheraton (the location of the conference) on October 21st. Naturally, most of the Outlandish Vancouver participants organized their schedule in order to get an autograph! I have seen her numerous times, but I made sure I did again.

Koko Introduces David to Diana

As I mentioned, the weekend was filled with a ton of highlights, but one very important moment was the meeting of David and Diana. The two had not met prior to the conference and gathering so when the opportunity came up, time was carved out for it, with the help of Koko Pipkin. Lord John Grey is such a crucial character in the series that I can only imagine what the conversation was like between the creator and actor.

If you are interested in attending one of these adventures, be sure you join the Outlandish Vancouver Facebook group.  They organize one every year in October, while the writing conference is being held. It’s definitely something you do not want to miss because of the talent they bring. Who will it be next year? Cesar Domboy? Graham McTavish? Nell Hudson? Who knows…but whomever it may be, I know it will be worth it – and you can bet I’ll be there next year!

Please stay tuned to our blog because I will be posting my David  Berry experience soon.
