We never would have predicted the beauty and diversity we would encounter on our last visit to this beautiful country, Canada! Our prior travels have brought us here before, but somehow this trip felt different. This visit was a welcomed escape from our usual Southern California heat. We enjoyed the ability to experience Vancouver’s physical change in seasons, while also being greeted by fresh mountain air and the splendor of the colorful landscape. From the breathtaking hues of red, yellow, and gold found in the autumn trees to the mountains that made their presence known on clearer days, we each immediately felt serenity being in this magnificent country.
This time of year is full of activity – shopping, Black Friday deals, Cyber Monday mayhem, cooking, and baking. It’s an extremely busy holiday with very little downtime, and we know you can relate. However, as Thanksgiving approaches, we ponder upon things for which we are grateful: family, friendship, our passion, and our health. Our year has been fortunate so, in today’s blog, Sass3 would like to express gratitude for all that we have accomplished, especially through Outlander!
We love all things Outlander! …and this new fan product by Insight Edition is one you will definitely want to add to your collection. As mentioned in a previous Timeless Sass3nach Journeys blog article, Insight Editions carries a wide array of fandom merchandise. From posters to journals, one can find something fun and useful.
For those who enjoy sending a message the old fashioned way, Insight Editions has produced Outlander Notecards and a Stationery Set that even includes sealing wax – replicating the 18th century.
Let’s take a look at these pieces as we delve into the lost art of letter writing…
Craigh na Dun is the enchanted, ancient ring of stones created by Diana Gabaldon to provide the portal through which Claire Randall time travels from 1945 to 1743.
One sure sign that you are addicted to Outlander is that you feel the need to touch any and all standing stones you come across. We had never noticed how many boulders and large rocks are used decoratively in yards, public areas such as malls and in front of restaurants, or even just along the roadway, until we witnessed Claire go through the stones at Craigh na Dun.
Images of Claire at the hilltop, hearing the buzz of the stones, immediately come to mind whenever I find a circle of rocks or any naturally formed ring of plants, hedges, or any piece of flora. While on hikes, it has become a pastime to stage photos of my Funko Pop! Jamie and Claire figures near flowers or stones. I decided it was time to have my very own Craigh na Dun and share this easy do-it-yourself project with you.
Season 3, Voyager, has begun. The Outlander producers and writers have brought us back to the 18th century, exposing viewers to the catastrophic events that resulted in the loss of thousands of lives at the Battle of Culloden. We also witness the violent suppression that soon followed to ensure the complete defeat of the Jacobite uprising of 1745. These events have moved Outlander fans, such as ourselves, to look beyond fiction to discover the true realities the Highlanders faced during this difficult time of history. In doing so, we have learned more about The Act of Proscription (1746), a law aimed to destroy the power of the clans and subdue any other attempts of revolt by prohibiting traditional Highland dress and possession of arms. The way of life for the Highlanders was ultimately destroyed, with devastating effects that reached well beyond the boundaries of war.
It is now 271 years after the Battle of Culloden. The strength of emotions that are elicited from the reflection of all that was lost on that battlefield can still be felt today. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series may have encouraged fans’ initial interest to follow these historical events. However, it is believed that her admirers now do so for a greater reason than solely searching for the literary footsteps of her noble characters. They research components of history, travel to sacred sites, and find ways to experience the magic of this majestic country to discover the true heart of Scotland: the culture, the people, and its heritage. Yet to understand the resilient spirit of this great nation, it is important to recognize the darker and more poignant moments of history that sculpted the past and led to the present. There is no better place to do this than spending time at The National Museum of Scotland.
SEASON 3 IS HERE! Droughtlander is over…finally. New episodes of Outlander, based on Diana Gabaldon’s third novel, Voyager, have begun, and we cannot stop raving about the most recent installment!
We, Sass3, want to share our reactions to the premiere episode, “The Battle Joined,” directed by Brendan Maher and written by Ronald D. Moore, which aired on STARZ on September 10, 2017.
BE WARNED: SPOILERS ARE THROUGH-OUT THIS ARTICLE! If you have not seen the premiere episode of Season 3, read on at your own risk.
We have loved watching the trailers for Season 3, not to mention the heart stopping images from the Entertainment Weekly cover shoot. This is a pure sign that Outlander is definitely back! If you have a wee addiction for anything Outlander, we can imagine your responses. The glimpses into the next season may have ignited a wealth of emotions – more likely it reinforced your addiction to all that Outlander holds true. The reflection of history, journeys of hope and faith, impact of war, examination of morality, suspense, test of character, voyages into the unknown, bonds of families, honor, and love. The absolute truth is that you are left wanting more! From our perspective, we were entranced and completely absorbed by the imagery of Season 3. Starz has done one thing completely correct, the adaptation of Outlander is and will always be OBSESSABLE.
Only seven more days until the season premiere! As we get closer to September 10th, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to discuss our newly cemented addiction to this series, our desire to send a sincere thank you to the entire cast and crew, and reflect on our favorite moments of Droughtlander.
One of the most anticipated scenes in Outlander, Season 3 is Claire’s return to the 18th century and finding Jamie. Fans were quite pleased, and a wee bit excited, when it was announced that the Starz booth at San Diego Comic-Con would be a recreation of the set of The Print Shop, where said reunion takes place.
Here, we give our readers a quick glance at A. Malcolm Printer and Bookseller’s shop.
Today marks the official day before San Diego Comic-Con! We were fortunate to have attended Emerald City Comicon earlier this year where we successfully attended panels and met the admirable Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. We are ecstatic that the Outlander cast will be coming to our city to mark the return of the series. We are proud to be badge holders and are seasoned enough to know the importance of developing strategies to successfully navigate between events being held throughout our glorious city of San Diego. Are we excited? Yes, just a little!
We can already anticipate waiting in the endless lines and making our way through a sea of crowds that encompass every aspect of this event – from anime to comics, movies to television, and beyond. Watching the highly anticipated panels and getting within proximity of actors and artists we admire will be our ultimate goal. We have each agreed to make the preparations necessary, as all invested fans do, to make our experience the best it can be given the wealth of fandoms that will be attending. We have talked about how to prepare for this convention, which we have undoubtedly taken to heart. In this blog we will explore the 5 things we look forward to experiencing as our adventures B-E-G-I-N!
What would life be like without good friends and family with whom to share it? They can lift us up, give us support throughout all of life’s offerings, and, most of all, they can give us the freedom to find our own adventure. Work and other responsibilities are an integral part of each of our daily routines. However, when a close friend calls you out of the blue to go on an epic road trip – to see Diana Gabaldon – while also offering a chance for spontaneity and adventure, what should you do? That’s right! Find a way to quickly organize, plan, and pack – knowing that you have the full support of your family in the process. Well, that is what happened to one of our Sass3 lassies. Given an opportunity to see Diana Gabaldon was an experience she could not miss. Whether meeting Diana Gabaldon for the first time, or in her case for the fourth time, the level of inspiration she offers to her readers is something that cannot be fully explained or even rationalized to those outside of this fandom. Filled with an adventurous spirit, an impetuous desire to meet the author she admires the most, and spending quality time with a dear friend who shares her same Outlander addiction, our lassie did what we all would most likely do – she set off for an unforgettable weekend trip to Arizona!
In this blog we will discuss her incredible journey, what we can share about the Q & A while attending The Poisoned Pen event supporting Diana Gabaldon’s newest short story MatchUp, and the joys of friendship that can make anyone feel 25 once again! Come and follow Jae’s journey as she drops everything to go and see Diana Gabaldon, whose literary work has offered her escape, solace, and the desire to follow in the footsteps of history.
