San Diego International Comic-Con: Let Our Adventures Begin!

Today marks the official day before San Diego Comic-Con! We were fortunate to have attended Emerald City Comicon earlier this year where we successfully attended panels and met the admirable Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. We are ecstatic that the Outlander cast will be coming to our city to mark the return of the series. We are proud to be badge holders and are seasoned enough to know the importance of developing strategies to successfully navigate between events being held throughout our glorious city of San Diego. Are we excited? Yes, just a little!

We can already anticipate waiting in the endless lines and making our way through a sea of crowds that encompass every aspect of this event – from anime to comics, movies to television, and beyond. Watching the highly anticipated panels and getting within proximity of actors and artists we admire will be our ultimate goal. We have each agreed to make the preparations necessary, as all invested fans do, to make our experience the best it can be given the wealth of fandoms that will be attending. We have talked about how to prepare for this convention, which we have undoubtedly taken to heart. In this blog we will explore the 5 things we look forward to experiencing as our adventures B-E-G-I-N!

Sass3nach’s Appreciation for Sam Heughan’s Portrayal of Jamie Fraser

Temptation not only for him, but for me.  For him, the chance to be what he was made for by nature, what fate had denied him.  He was born and bred to this: the stewardship of a large estate, the care of the people on it, a place of respect among men of substance, his peers. More importantly, the restoration of clan and family.

Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Chapter 13

Jamie Fraser is one of the greatest literary characters. Diana Gabaldon has seamlessly created and developed him to be complete with a high sense of integrity, honor, ingenuity, and leadership that sets him apart from all the other characters.  Yet, he also shares the same hopes, fears and even mannerisms that can be subjectively related to each and every one of us.  This ability to present the character of Jamie Fraser with depth and human appeal is what allows us to clearly identify and feel as though there is a real personal connection to him.  For all of us, it feels like this bond has grown stronger with each book in the series and also from watching the award nominating performances of Sam Heughan, who portrays Jamie Fraser.

In this blog we wanted to send our sincere appreciation for all that Sam Heughan does on and behind the Outlander series.  From charitable endeavors to supporting social change, he has put his stardom to great use.  In addition, his portrayal of Jamie Frasier continues to capture his audience and take command of the screen.  To avid fans there is simply nothing better.  We know his relentless work ethic will lead him on a path of continued success and no one deserves it more.   Continue reading Sass3nach’s Appreciation for Sam Heughan’s Portrayal of Jamie Fraser

My Outlander Anniversary: Making Book Boxes with Fellow Fans

Let Life Surprise You…

Life takes us in so many different directions.  This blog marks the one year anniversary of when I first became acquainted with my local enthusiasts who love Outlander as much as I do.  I find comfort in the knowledge that there are others as equally passionate as I am about the Outlander series.  Each fan has their own story of how they found other like-minded individuals who have invested themselves into this amazing fandom.  How did I find this group, one might ask?  My simple answer – over coffee.

A Cherished Moment With Terry Dresbach

Who motivates you?  I find myself constantly inspired by many people around me, as well as the creative minds behind the authenticity of Outlander itself.  From costumes to set design, I continue to be amazed by their innovation, drive for their craft, and their willingness to share their vision and inspiration of specific pieces with fans.

Watching the process from afar has been a pleasant journey.  However, when I had the opportunity to meet someone I greatly admire, I was filled with excitement that was beyond words.  Needless to say, I struggled to maintain my composure during a brief conversation with one person who absolutely moves me:  the beautiful and talented Terry Dresbach.

Favorite Moments Of 2016

As we close 2016, we decided to take a moment to appreciate the positive experiences this year has offered us.  As three professional women, with families, we balance work, busy schedules, and taking time to go out and experience all that the Outlander fandom has to offer.  We have loved our time going to Outlander events, as there is no better way to get through Droughtlander than being with others who have your same addiction.  Sharing our adventures in all things Outlander was our motivation to start this blog.  We have enjoyed having a place to talk about our love for the books, author, show, cast, and crew.   As we begin the festivities to celebrate the new year, we wanted to take time to reflect on our favorite memories of 2016.  Come take a look at some of our favorite moments!

Creating Your Own Modern Outlandish Wear

The gown was two years out of fashion by cosmopolitan standards of Jamaica, but it was clean, which was the main thing so far as I was concerned.

The gown itself was not at all bad, it was of cream silk, half sleeved and very simple, but with panniers of wine-striped silk over the hips, and a ruching of claret-colored silk piping that ran in two rows from waist to bosom.  With the Brussels lace I had purchased sewn around the sleeves, I though it would do, even if the cloth was not quite the first quality.

“I’m glad you picked that one.” I said, touching the stone gently.  It was warm from his body.  “Goes much better with the dress than the sapphire or the emerald would.”

Jamie had finally taken time to notice the rest of my costume.  His eye traveled slowly over me from head to hem, and a smile spread across his face.

“Ye make a verra ornamental jewel box, Sassenach,” he said.  “A fine distraction, aye?”

Diana Gabaldon, Drums of Autumn. Chapter 6, pages 101 – 104.

I love fashion.  I often look at web sites of my favorite clothing stores to look for inspiration on looks and sewing ideas.  Lately, I have found myself often turning to Anthropologie and Pinterest for my newest ideas.  Unfortunately, my tastes do not often meet my budget.  So when I can, I try and make pieces myself.  There  is nothing better that adding new life to something that I already own or even upscaling a piece of clothing that was once considered out of style. Just as Claire’s gown in Drums of Autumn.  ♥

I truly enjoy attending events and gatherings that bring Outlander fans together.  One of my favorite gatherings was held at the Domaine Artefact Winery located in Escondido, California.  The winery previously held an Outlandish Wine Tasting event to help celebrate their wine entitled La Dame Blanche, named in honor of our beloved Claire Fraser.

The Getty Center, located in Los Angeles, is a unique destination that was a must see! The architecture of the museum is as unique as the exhibits held inside. Before entering the museum, I first had to explore the Central Garden.  It can be described as a natural, living work of art that incorporates over 500 plant varieties that constantly change with the seasons.  A must see!
