Season 3, Voyager, has begun. The Outlander producers and writers have brought us back to the 18th century, exposing viewers to the catastrophic events that resulted in the loss of thousands of lives at the Battle of Culloden. We also witness the violent suppression that soon followed to ensure the complete defeat of the Jacobite uprising of 1745. These events have moved Outlander fans, such as ourselves, to look beyond fiction to discover the true realities the Highlanders faced during this difficult time of history. In doing so, we have learned more about The Act of Proscription (1746), a law aimed to destroy the power of the clans and subdue any other attempts of revolt by prohibiting traditional Highland dress and possession of arms. The way of life for the Highlanders was ultimately destroyed, with devastating effects that reached well beyond the boundaries of war.
It is now 271 years after the Battle of Culloden. The strength of emotions that are elicited from the reflection of all that was lost on that battlefield can still be felt today. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series may have encouraged fans’ initial interest to follow these historical events. However, it is believed that her admirers now do so for a greater reason than solely searching for the literary footsteps of her noble characters. They research components of history, travel to sacred sites, and find ways to experience the magic of this majestic country to discover the true heart of Scotland: the culture, the people, and its heritage. Yet to understand the resilient spirit of this great nation, it is important to recognize the darker and more poignant moments of history that sculpted the past and led to the present. There is no better place to do this than spending time at The National Museum of Scotland.

There are many characters in the Outlander series that immediately grab one’s attention. Diana Gabaldon has shared her writing process on several panels we have attended. We are always fascinated to hear her speak of her own manner in developing the nature and disposition of each individual within the series. She is able to follow her own instincts to masterfully bring the essence of each character to life. We admire her ability to draw from her own memories, use her imagination to create vivid context, and utilize true components of history to form her timelines. The results of her writing are unlike any other author we have experienced. As readers, it is easy to immerse ourselves in this fictional world and quickly form an emotional connection to the characters she introduces. Yet, as we follow their journey of adventure, success, hardships, and facing unfathomable barriers – each are capable of surprising us in the most unexpected ways.
There are a several roles within the series that endure surprising transformations through dramatic shifts in the storyline over the course of the books. A few that immediately come to mind include Young Ian Fraser Murray and Fergus Fraser. However, it is Brianna Randall Fraser and Roger Wakefield MacKenzie’s journey that comes to the forefront when we think of characters who will soon embark on a remarkable journey. Everyone loves characters they can root for, and these two will certainly not disappoint. Leaving fans who have read the books to hold their breath, we not only foresee the events in their future, but also look forward to seeing the progression of this dynamic relationship on screen.
Seeing Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton at San Diego Comic-Con was an incredible experience, and we can certainly attest that their chemistry is a perfect match for what lies ahead for their characters! We are getting closer to the highly anticipated Season 3 of Outlander. Can you believe it is only 29 days away! It is clear – we are not counting the exact time we have left, as we each smile in this revelation. To pass the time we have found ourselves re-watching our favorite episodes to divert our attention away from the daily countdown until the premiere. As we spend time watching treasured scenes, we are constantly reminded of the detail and artistry that could be seen within each set. It was remarkable to see each episode vibrantly come to life throughout their time in Scotland and the opulent lifestyle that was synonymous with upper class living in 18th century Paris. There is no question that the lavish portrayal of Paris intrigued us the most. These episodes were a visual feast that included rich colors, elaborate set designs, and striking textiles that told a story of prosperity and wealth that was representative of French nobility and upper class living during this time period.
Reminiscing about our favorite episodes in Paris, reminded us of Jae’s recent visit to London where she was able to explore one specific area of splendor that was shared between all nations. We are always in search to learn more about the historical reflections present in the show and within the books. It was natural for us to find a way to momentarily escape to the past, linking pieces of the show to true elements of history – such as the coaches that were designed to transport members of upper society. From Versailles to the wealthy middle class within the city, coaches were a vital means of transportation. Come, travel with us to the Royal Mews in London to discover a historical collection of coaches that will bring additional appreciation for those displayed during the filming of Outlander, while also bringing to light their importance in higher societal life.

We find complete enjoyment in following the images and information shared through social media of the filming process of Season 3. The anticipation of the upcoming season is often hard to bare, so we find ourselves searching for ways to sustain our wee addiction to all things Outlander. We have been successful so far, as we have purchased new items to express our love for this series through Etsy, AbbyShot, as well as Redbubble. In our attempts to expand our repertoire of distractions while we await for the highly anticipated release of Voyager, we have joined various art groups and have even started developing our own crafting skills to bring other unique pieces of decor into our homes. We certainly find points of inspiration in all forms. In this case, we were inspired by one of Claire’s Parisian costumes that was on display at the Paley Center during the “Artistry of Outlander” exhibition.

Scott Kyle – a man of many talents: actor, artistic director, venue manager, commercial producer, teacher. He has played roles in several movies, has organized special events and works with today’s youth in order to build their artistic future. He is so much more than we had imagined!
Scott became known to the Outlander world as Ross Owen, Lallybroch’s blacksmith in Season Two, Dragonfly in Amber. He has taken time to converse with us, Timeless Sass3nach Journeys. In our interview, we found that there is so much more to Scott Kyle than meets the eye. It is through his endearing portrayal of Ross that we became admirers of Scott. In this role, it is his character’s stirring interaction with Kincaid, played by Scottish actor Gregor Firth that drew our attention to Scott. In the episode they made a pact: if one met his demise, the other would care for his wife and children. It was a touching scene, but we don’t want to give away more. Due to his wonderful depiction of the blacksmith highlander, Scott’s fanbase began to grow. We also grew to love him because he graciously interacts with his fans on social media on a regular basis, taking the time to respond somehow to those who absolutely adore him. This commitment to fans hasn’t gone unnoticed. Scott is someone who would be a truly dedicated friend, much like his character, Ross.
In our interview, we were able to learn about Scott’s beginnings and his devotional work at a restored and revived theater in Scotland. It was a pleasure to get to know him and share his story.

Dawn Chandler illustrates the magic of being a performer. She is able to interpret and tell a story that invites an emotional connection to her viewers, allowing them to truly feel part of the narrative being told. From theatre to television, she has begun to place her artistic mark with each performance credit. Her dedication to her craft is also portrayed in her desire to continue expanding her levels of presentation by going beyond each roles initial expectations. To watch her authentically interpret each character she embodies is always enjoyable to witness. However, we also believe one of her biggest merits lies in her genuine personality that she displays outside of her work as an actress. Her heartfelt messages to fans and our ease of conversation during this interview made us realize how grounded and humble she truly is – and we would love nothing more than to be able to sit down and enjoy a drink with her one day. It is with great pleasure that Sass3 presents the talented Dawn Chandler. We feel honored to have had the opportunity to communicate with her after the completion of Season 2 finale of Outlander.
