Following the Footsteps of Jamie Fraser: Printing Press + Tea = A Memorable Afternoon

Outlander has forever changed us. With all the choices of book authors and genres to choose from, nothing seems to compare to the writings of Diana Gabaldon. The length of her books are not for the faint of heart. However, those that begin the journey soon discover a whole new world awaits. It has led us to broaden our horizons by expanding our adventures and allowing us to meet others who share the same admiration for this series. As our appreciation for each character grows, we have been inspired to search for ways to walk in their footsteps.

Today’s adventure was no exception. We found a way to get closer to Jamie Fraser by exploring a local printing press. We couldn’t wait to discover more about the history that surrounded Jamie at this time and what defined him as The King of The Press in our eyes. Travel back in time with us as we explore the history and workings of the printing press in historic Old Town, San Diego. Following this adventure and fun photo opportunities within the Print Shop, we decided to head to Afternoon Tea at the historic Cosmopolitan Hotel. Needless to say, it was a day we will always remember!

Our Journey to Cosplay with AbbyShot

Outlander is a story that is appreciated well beyond the boundaries of traditional entertainment. For us, it will always be more than a book or television series. Diana Gabaldon’s stories speak inherent truths we all can relate to within our own lives. The journey she takes her readers on allow moments of reflection, enable deeper understanding of relationships, offer hope, and, most of all, encourage strength and resilience. It is easy to identify with each character in some way – perhaps through the emotions they expressed, the choices that they made, loss they experienced, or in the traces of humanity that easily come to life through the poetic words of Diana Gabaldon.

Outlander Season 3 Premiere Viewing Party at Wine Works in San Diego: Voyager, The Battle Joined

We get excited when we gather with our Outlander Clan, and we know you can relate! Anytime Sass3 has the opportunity to be with like-minded people, we drop everything and go (after making sure we get our families secured, of course!). In today’s blog, we share the premiere viewing party we attended that was held in San Diego, California.

Eager to see the new episode of  Voyager, “The Battle Joined,” the three of us jumped into a crowded van and headed to La Mesa Wine Works for the festivities planned for the evening. With five other lassies, we made our way to a very cute wine tasting room which offered wine from two local wineries: San Pasqual Winery and Wyatt Oaks Winery.  Continue reading Outlander Season 3 Premiere Viewing Party at Wine Works in San Diego: Voyager, The Battle Joined

National Museum of Scotland: Experience The Events That Led to The Battle of Culloden

Season 3, Voyager, has begun. The Outlander producers and writers have brought us back to the 18th century, exposing viewers to the catastrophic events that resulted in the loss of thousands of lives at the Battle of Culloden. We also witness the violent suppression that soon followed to ensure the complete defeat of the Jacobite uprising of 1745. These events have moved Outlander fans, such as ourselves, to look beyond fiction to discover the true realities the Highlanders faced during this difficult time of history. In doing so, we have learned more about The Act of Proscription (1746), a law aimed to destroy the power of the clans and subdue any other attempts of revolt by prohibiting traditional Highland dress and possession of arms. The way of life for the Highlanders was ultimately destroyed, with devastating effects that reached well beyond the boundaries of war.

It is now 271 years after the Battle of Culloden. The strength of emotions that are elicited from the reflection of all that was lost on that battlefield can still be felt today. Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series may have encouraged fans’ initial interest to follow these historical events. However, it is believed that her admirers now do so for a greater reason than solely searching for the literary footsteps of her noble characters. They research components of history, travel to sacred sites, and find ways to experience the magic of this majestic country to discover the true heart of Scotland: the culture, the people, and its heritage. Yet to understand the resilient spirit of this great nation, it is important to recognize the darker and more poignant moments of history that sculpted the past and led to the present. There is no better place to do this than spending time at The National Museum of Scotland.

Novel Adventures: Redefining the Face of Travel

Travel is a means for many of us to expand our perspective and our understanding of the world that surrounds us. These long-lasting benefits can also be found in reading. It can allow us to form new outlooks on life, inspire the acquisition of knowledge, introduce ourselves to new places of discovery, and even have the power of transforming our lives for the better. Each of these values are typically most inspired when reading novels that allow us to transport ourselves, often without knowing, into the character’s journey, voice, and soul. It is then not uncommon for increased personal investment to occur, as we willingly search for opportunities to escape into the fictional world that our favorite authors present to us. Many series have this power – such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Gone with the Wind, Poldark, Lord of the Rings, and in our case, Outlander.
